George
Sharp retired in 2002 from Weyerhaeuser Company after
25 years as Director of Mineral Resources. In that capacity
he managed exploration and development for all mineral commodities
on Weyerhaeuser’s timberlands and mineral holdings
in the US and Canada. He also managed geohazards (volcanoes
and earthquakes) for Company facilities and personnel
in the Pacific NW.
Prior
to Weyerhaeuser, Sharp worked as an exploration petroleum
geologist for 9 years; first with the Shell Oil Company
in their Frontier Exploration Group and later with the
Tenneco Oil Company as their Division Geologist for the
Rocky Mountain Division in Denver.
George
is a native of Portland, Oregon and received BS degrees
in geology(1967), math(1968), and an MS degree in geology(1969)
– all from Oregon State.
Sharp is currently serving a 5- year term as Trustee and member of the
Executive Committee with the GSA Foundation, is a Delegate and Trustee
Associate with the AAPG, and volunteers for the Forest Learning Center at
Mt St Helens. He has served in the past on the Boards of the NW Mining
Association and the NW Energy Association and is a registered geologist in
Oregon and Washington.
George
lives north of Olympia in Lakewood, Washington with his
wife, Danielle. They travel extensively, work in the garden,
keep active with jogging, hiking and tennis, and spend
time keeping up their cabin at Zig Zag on the flanks of
Mt. Hood.
