Dr. Marston is University Distinguished Professor and Head of Geography at Kansas State University . He served as 102 nd President of the Association of American Geographers in 2005-06. Since 1999, Marston has also been Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal, Geomorphology. The American Institute of Hydrology certified Marston as Professional Hydrologist #488 in 1984 and he has been recertified several times. Marston has been elected a Fellow in four professional organizations: the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2005), Geological Society of America (1997), Explorers Club (1995), and Royal Geographical Society (1991). In 2003, Marston received the Ronald F. Abler Distinguished Service Honors from the AAG.
Prior to joining Kansas State University in 2005, Marston held the endowed Sun Chair of Geology for six years at Oklahoma State University . While at OSU, Marston was awarded the 2004 Sterling L. Burks Award for Outstanding Environmental Research He served on the Geography faculty for 13 years at the University of Wyoming , and six years at the University of Texas-El Paso. He spent the 1996-97 academic year at the University of Alaska-Southeast ( Juneau ), where he helped establish a new undergraduate program in environmental science while also serving as Director of the Foundation for Glacier and Environmental Research. Marston earned all of his degrees in geography: a B.A. from UCLA in 1974, followed by the M.S. and Ph.D. from Oregon State University in 1976 and 1980, respectively. He specializes in environmental geography, geomorphology, mountain geography, and water resource geography.
Marston's principal contributions to geography have been studies that separate the effect of human activities on landscapes from change that would have occurred without human interference. Forty students have completed their graduate degrees under Marston's supervision. Dick met his wife, Linda (a cartographer and geoscience education specialist), during their time together as geography graduate students in Corvallis. They are proud parents of two children, Bryce and Brooke.
